The first 3 are from a new collection I am calling the simply mary colletion by Mary's Cottage Quilts. I am very excited about these patterns! Actually the first two are the same quilt! I wanted to make them look totally different and I really like the way they both turned out - each has its own personality. I also wanted to give you all a little background on how simply mary came to be so here goes:

At work I have meetings and sometimes I just happen to doodle on the sides of my papers (hmmm imagine that, me not being able to pay attention) anyway, these doodles are turning into some very cool quilt designs that I am excited to share with you. Please feel free to make these quilts your way, in your favorite colors… “own them”. I hope you will get as excited about these simple and graphic new patterns as I have and want to make them all!

Holy Crap! You wouldn't believe what I did last weekend... and it had nothing to do with sewing!!!!

I ran a relay race called RAGNAR .

Here we are (van #1) leaving at 3:30am to drive up to Logan Utah to start the race. Don't we all look wide awake and ready to go??

At the finish line in Park City Utah!! We all survived!

We started on Friday and finished on Saturday. When it was all over, I said "no way, never again will I ever do this"!! But by the time Monday rolled around I was saying.. "IF I was to do it again I would do this and this and this.." and then by Tuesday I was saying "It was fun!" I can't believe I am saying that!

Ok, so, any of you who know me know what an absolute BASKETBALL FAN I am. I love March because it is the month when the NCAA TOURNAMENT is played. I love watching the little guy upset the big guys, I love the bracket filling out/office pool thing and I especially love to sit and watch basketball game after basketball game - I know, call me weird.. (It's also a great time to get some binding done)!!

So, here's the scoop. In honor of the tournament I thought I would have a giveaway. All you have to do is leave me a comment - could be sports related, could be quilting related, could be both... I'll randomly choose 4 winners (in honor of the FINAL FOUR) on the 25th of March (I know, the real Final Four isn't played until April 2 but come on, I can't keep you hanging forever). Ok, ok, here goes the totally cool scoop!!

Ok, so here I am once again.. spilling beans.

Some of you know that International Spring Quilt Market 2011 is being held in Salt Lake City, Utah...which is my hood!!!! (and that's pretty cool if you ask me).

Some of the Utah based designers (pattern designers, fabric designers etc) are putting together a super awesome promo / "booth hop" called All Dolled Up in Salt Lake City! This is very cool if you are a shop owner coming to market... We are celebrating this super awesome promo by putting together a quilt or two.

Each of us has been asked to design a quilt block based on a doll (think paper doll here). We were given a template for the doll and some fabric to use for clothing etc. We all used the provided paper doll template then dressed her up however we wanted (you know, really make her "our own") these blocks will then be made into a quilt or two and displayed in the Riley Blake booth at market. I think the quilt/quilts will be given away as prizes.

We also each made a doll block for our own booth. The instructions for the blocks and the quilt will be featured on the All Dolled Up in SLC website I mentioned earlier.

I am super excited to share my doll with you. Now, any of you who know me, know that I am not a blond but... I just thought that blond hair went with my doll in this setting :). I am not an applequer (is that even a word?) But, I like how it turned out.

So, without further yammering on.... here's my girl!

I used brown buttons for the coconuts on the tree and a cool pin from my friend Valerie for the sunglasses. My friend Ann wrote my name about 25 times and I copied it to make my signature. When I told her I used brown for coconuts she said "Oh no, You didn't make a coconut bra did you"! I laughed so hard! Now I totally wish I had done that!!!

when a quilt pattern idea turns into a math problem

Mary has 16 brown 1/8th yards, 10 aqua fat quarters, and 12 light cream fat quarters.

I had a design in mind (in my head) but I can't make it work.. It looks yucky! So it's back to the drawing board for me and my fabric... I now feel like this is a story problem.

but...

I am excited to see what happens here... I'll keep you posted.

What do you do when this happens?? I would love any suggestions / comments - then I'll know I'm not alone in my sewing room with my "math / story problem"

SO EXCITED I CAN'T SIT STILL FOR ONE MORE MINUTE.......

It's my very OWN book and it will be out in JUNE! I saw this on Amazon's website and almost had a COW!!

I started on this book with C&T Publishing last spring, and had to promise to keep it under wraps until now and yes, it's a major miracle that I didn't let the cat out of the bag a long time ago!!

I am SO excited! I have never done anything like this before!

Now I just hope people like it!!

On December 24th my dear Aunt passed away. It was sad because we will all miss her, she was very kind and sweet. I believe that she is with her husband and sisters and all her family that has already passed on. She was 97 and lived a very full life.

At her funeral, one of her grandsons told a very dear story about the visits he and his family had with their grandma. He said that she would smile so big that her smile would go all the way to her eyes and they would light up too. His family would stay and visit for awhile and as they were leaving she would smile again but this time the smile wouldn't go all the way to her eyes...

This is the same Aunt that we would sometimes invite out to Sunday dinner in the summer. She would always fuss and say "you went to so much trouble to have me out for dinner". But it was really no trouble at all! To us it was time to spend with our Aunt, it was another leaf in the table and an extra hamburger on the grill. It was just a little thing to us but it meant so much to her.

This year, I'm going to try to do more of the little things that mean so much to others.

Well, it's January and time for resolutions and this is one I intend to keep. So... while you are all making your New Year's goals, add this one to the list. You never know what your little act of kindness will mean to someone else.

May your new year be filled with happiness and health!

Here is my whole outfit... I liked the look but am not happy with these pictures, I look like I weigh about 700 lbs.(eeek) but oh well..

Check out the shoes! I am totally in love with them! I think I was about 5'7" that night (which is a big deal if you've ever seen me in person). I was a little scared the first time I looked down at my feet because I was so far off the ground - I am not used to that at all!!!
We danced the night away and my feet were killing me by the last dance - but it was such a blast! I work with a cool bunch of people!

I put the cool insert in these pants - don't you just LOVE Kaffe?? His designs are retro and now all at the same time.. (I did get a lot of compliments on them too).

I remember waaaay back in the 80's when the first Tron was released and I was so excited to see it (with my acid washed jeans and ripped sweatshirt ala Flashdance) hahaha! Those were the days!

Anyway... Since I can't even remember the first one, I am going to watch it again and then see the new one next week! So excited!!

So much for my posting every day (a valiant effort though). I am listening to my son play Christmas songs on the piano as I write this. Tonight we went to Pioneer Theater to see White Christmas - it was so good. I think that is my all time favorite Christmas movie. When the general walks down the stairs I always get a tear in my eye.
So, having said that, it now feels like Christmas to me. Now I gotta get busy, make my list and check it twice... Heading to the mall (or should I say maul) in the morning... wish me luck :)

Sweet Emotion

My latest quilt! It's a little guy (32" x 43"), but I think it's so cute!! The pattern is called Sweet Emotion (any Aerosmith fans out there) and I made it out of Barbara Jones new line called Summertime. I love, love, love the green in it (but then again I am a sucker for lime green). It will be hanging in its new home at Pine Needles which is located in Gardner Village (in Utah).

top 10 reasons why I quilt

2. love the creative process

3. sometimes (yes sometimes...) it relaxes me

4. I have met some awesome people that have become my friends

5. seeing what happens when two blocks "touch" and the secondary pattern that is created (sometimes it is a total surprise to me)

6. getting together with my "quilt group" and seeing what everyone else is up to

7. visiting all the quilt shops here in Utah (we are very spoiled)

8. being able to hang out in my basement in my ratty thread covered sweats and just sew

9. the joy of giving a quilt to someone who really appreciates it!

10. putting the last stitch in the binding

I am having computer problems (trying to download the pictures I took at Pine Needles yesterday) so I thought I would share a Christmas memory from my childhood.

My family (mom, dad, Dan, and I) used to go to my Uncle Ken and Aunt Elly's house every Christmas afternoon for our family Christmas dinner. We would exchange gifts with all of our cousins and just have a blast.
My aunt & uncle lived at the top of a hill in Victor NY. I remember the long steep driveway they had. During the family party the kids would always go sledding and we always had so much fun!

One year there had been a terrible snow storm, from what I remember, the roads were ok but my Aunt's driveway was filled with tons of snow and there was NO way we were getting up it. I remember my mom putting all the gifts and stuff in a sled and my dad pulling it up the hill. I also remember wondering how we were going to get my 90 year old grandpa up.
We ended up putting him in the sled on the next trip and giving him a ride up the hill. I still picture my distinguished grandpa, in his overcoat and hat, and white shirt and tie getting a ride up the hill. He loved it!

He was an awesome guy and he lived to be 101. I wish I had a picture of him from that Christmas! This picture of him above is from a very long time ago - when he was MUCH younger. He is sharing a Popsicle with my cousin Anne.

I get to go on a little quilting jaunt today - I am so excited!!

I am going to Pine Needles to drop off a quilt I made for their store. It's called Sweet Emotion and I made it out of Barbara Jones' new line called SUMMERTIME. I love this line! I love the green in it!

I am also going to shoot a few pictures of 2 other quilts that the store remade. 1 is Apple Jax and the other is Topsy Turvey I can't wait to see how they turned out.. stay tuned and I'll share pictures with you!!

Thanks for all of the suggestions on my 70's wear. I found a cool pair of bell bottoms the other day. I am excited for the party!

I haven't been doing much quilting right now, more in the "getting ready for Christmas" mode. We baked sugar cookies last night and will frost them tonight. I always put a little orange flavoring in my frosting - it makes the cookies taste delicious!

So, share... what are some of your favorite holiday traditions. I would love to hear about them.

Our work Christmas party has a dress theme.... the 60's & 70's. Ok, people this is where I need help since I am the original "fashion don't".

I did find the TALLEST and most perfect black platform shoes ever so I am set in the footwear department. I also found this super groovy multicolored corduroy paisley jacket.

BUT.... I am at a loss as to what type of pants and shirt I should wear and HOW SHOULD I DO MY HAIR AND MAKEUP??

Since I was a baby in the 60's and tween/teenager in the 70's, I really can't remember all the fashions!

A little (read a lot) of help/suggestions would be much appreciated!!!

I know you guys won't let me down!!

I thought I would start with a cookie recipe my mom made every Christmas. She got the recipe from a friend Nan so these cookies have always been called Nan's Christmas Cookies. They are so cool because you can make them ahead of time and slice & cook as needed.

I hope you enjoy them as much as we did. I think it's the only time that candied fruit should be allowed in a cookie (I am NOT a fruit cake person)

NAN'S CHRISTMAS COOKIES

2-1/2 cups white sugar
1# butter
3 eggs
5 cups sifted white flour
dash of salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 cup walnuts
1/2 cup candied pineapple
1/2 cup candied red cherries (cut in thirds)
1/2 cup candied green cherries (cut in thirds)

Cream butter & sugar, add ingredients in above order. Form into rolls (like snakes about 2" in diameter) and wrap in wax paper. Put in refrigerator overnight. Slice 1/4" thick slices with a sharp knife. Bake at 325 for 10 minutes. COOKIES SHOULD BE WHITE NOT BROWN.

Well, here they are... my new FALL COLLECTION of patterns!

This one is called Stepping Stones, it's made out of 1 layer cake (you use the leftover layer cakes on the back). I made it in 3 different fabric lines. The first is cute Camille & Bonnie's line called Bliss by MODA (LOVE THIS LINE!!)

The second Stepping Stones is made out of a line by Lila Tueller for RILEY BLAKE (love this one - yes I am a sucker for fabric)! Plus, I have been waiting forever to use this cool truck in a picture too!

One more time... This one is a line by Oliver & Co. by MODA too, although the borders are from another line.. (the line came out in stores right after I completed this quilt).

This quilt is called Trailing Diamonds and I made it out of Mrs. March's line from LECIEN. I love the soft colors here.

Here is my Sampler / Block of the Month. I have wanted to do one of these for SO long and I am super excited to be able to show it to you all now!! I made it in 2 colorways. The first one is a new line from MODA called Luna Notte.

Here's the more "modern" version made out of batiks and white. I love them both, and I love how different they look.

Mended Fences is what this quilt is called. I made it out of Centenary and Kamekajima from LECIEN. I love how warm it looks. I also love the cool fence I found to drape it over and shoot a picture of it - the mountains in the background are pretty neat too.

Last but NOT least is Sugar Plum. My daughter drew this block a couple of years ago and showed it to me - I totally loved it and made it out of Barbara Jones' Bubble Gum Basics line. Then when I saw this beautiful new WINDHAM line called Miniatures at Quilts Etc. and I knew I wanted to remake it out of these yummy pinks and creams. I love the way it turned out! (and my daughter still wants her "cut" from each pattern).

Hope you like them! I am glad they are all done!!

The Quilt Show in the Barn!!

I know, I know, 2 posts from me in 1 day (after not posting for like months...)

But I just HAD to blog about this....

Every other year this quilt group full of awesome women in the Salt Lake area, put on a quilt show in a barn for charity - the charity is The Road Home.
It is so cool to see the beautiful work these ladies produce!! I wanted to share just a few pictures of these beautiful quilts with you! These are not photoshopped (didn't have time to do that) but I hope you all enjoy them!

A cute version of my pattern Lissy's Flowers (and my cousin in the picture too)

I love that vintage quilt hanging out the side of the car too.

And look at these darling little guys!!

And hey, it's my Four Square pattern too!! I love the rich colors Pam used! (she told me she used a lot of her scraps on this one)

It all started with this.... well, actually it started with the dishwasher fire.. but that's a story for another day.

Once that project was done, we went on a vacation to NY and Washington DC (in August - the hottest possible time to go to DC)..

This was my FAVORITE building (I see quilts here)

Then we came home on a friday and school started on monday... and summer was over... SO SAD!!

9 interesting facts

Today I thought I would share 10 random things about me. Some are funny and some are probably just plain weird but oh well...

1. I always listen to Rod Stewart's Great American Songbook CD's when writing patterns - I don't know why, it's just soothing to me.
2. At the 7-11 my drink of choice is a Big Gulp of 3/4 Diet Coke and 1/4 Diet Pepsi.
3. I pretend to like running but most of the time I just tolerate it.. But, I do like it when I am done though.
4. If I didn't sew all the time, I would probably have a job in the printing industry - it just fascinates me.
5. I have a 4 color pen (you know the orange bic one that you had in 6th grade)and I use every day.
6. I'm really only 5'1 3/4 even though I say I am 5'2.
7. I HATE wet feet.
8. I am a terrible speller (thank you spell check).
9. I LOVE office supply and stationery stores
10. I LOVE to take pictures - some are good and some are not so good...

I really liked this turkey, it was behind a fence so I couldn't get a very good shot but I love the colors on his head!

those lazy days of summer... where have they gone?

I know, I started this post like 100 years ago... but.. I do have a list of excuses dealing with my lack of blogging (if you need an one please feel free to borrow one of these)

1. It's the "lazy summer days" and I sitting on my lawn chair drinking strawberry lemonade or something and eating bonbons.
2. My dog ate all of my quilts and now I have to make more.
3. I had to take the kids to swimming.
4. I have to clean my sewing room (you could insert the house here too).
5. I've been working like a house elf on some UFO's.
6. I had to make dinner.
7. I got this great deal on fat quarters now I have to find something to do with them.

I'll be glad to share my list - just pick your favorite excuse or make up a new one!

I did actually want to show ya'll how different the same quilt can look simply by changing the fabric / colors!
All of these quilts are made from my pattern "On The Run". The pattern comes with instructions for 2 different sizes and all of these are the smaller size except for the last one - I made for my mom and I added a row or 2 to it to make it twin size. So sit back and enjoy my mini quilt show... I've gotta go, I think I hear my lawn chair calling me ;)

This is where I wish I was today - at the lake celebrating with my family!

At Conesus Lake we have always celebrated the 4th of July on the 3rd of July (I know, weird huh..) Family, parties, boat parades, bonfires, a ton of fireworks and the Ring of Fire in the evening.

We celebrated the 100th anniversary of the cottage a couple of years ago and I can still remember how much fun we all had.

So, here's to my family, Happy 3rd, we are thinking about you all and love you so much!

Never a Dull Moment Around Here Folks!

Yes!!! I feel the relief that can only accompany the last quilt being delivered to the fabric manufacturer who will take it to market for their booth!!!! I am officially DONE!!! What an awesome feeling!!! After I left their warehouse, I did the victory dance in the parking lot!

But, I must tell you of the experience I had while photographing these quilts...
It all started a couple of weeks ago when I completed 4 of the 5 quilts. I decided to go shoot them on a Sunday at Wheeler Farms - for all of you non Utah folk, Wheeler Farms is a farm with cows, chickens, ducks, geese, goats... you get the idea.

This was the loud goose that scared me!

Well, on that particular Sunday as we braved the windy drizzle, we (me and my trusty quilt models) were greeted (read terrorized) by territorial geese and amorous ducks . We were able to get the pictures taken between raindrops and wind gusts (and I think they turned out pretty darn good too). It was quite the day. I think photographing 13 two year olds on a sugar high would have been easier... or at least as much fun!

One more of the territorial geese - he looks like he is ready to charge us.

So..... without further ramblings from me, let me introduce you all to my new Spring 2010 line of patterns:

shhhh, my little secret

For those of you who don't know this little fact about me here goes... I LOVE COLLEGE BASKETBALL!!

March is absolutely my favorite time of the year because that is when the NCAA Tournament aka March Madness goes on. I faithfully fill out my bracket every year then I sit and watch as many games as possible.

I actually watched some of the games in person a few years back when a couple of early rounds were held up at the University of Utah. This year some rounds held in the Delta Center but I didn't go (much to my sadness).

I am watching them tonight and hoping Butler wins - they are the underdogs and I always cheer for the underdogs (my dad used to do that too).

So, I will not be sewing anymore tonight, I will be cheering on the Butler Bulldogs... and tomorrow I will be sewing again and sad that there is no more college basketball for awhile.

Hope you all have a nice night and don't turn off the tv till after they play "One Shining Moment"

April Fools!

It never fails.. about this time of the year Pam starts posting all of these pretty flower shots (which I totally love). When I look out the window this is what I see.

I took these yesterday - once the snow stopped and the sun came out it wasn't that bad. Today the sun is out again and hopefully all of this snow will melt soon! But, I have to admit, it is kind of pretty.

SNOW, SNOW AND MORE SNOW.... Big Huge flakes! It looked like someone was throwing pieces of cotton from the clouds! Good thing it's a spring snow and will be gone in a couple of days. Then the temprature will be back in the 60's with any luck at all!!

But still... I don't like it!

Hmmmm, I'll just have to stay in where it's warm and dry and sew all day. I guess it could be worse ;)

We Interrupt this Blog to Bring You an Important Public Service Announcement!

Ok, So, last Monday night (a week ago) I am getting ready for bed and I turn on the dishwasher and go upstairs (like I do every night). I am fiddling around on the computer when I hear these weird noises downstairs so I check them out.

I walk downstairs and enter the kitchen and there is SMOKE coming out of the dishwasher!!! You know, that stinky, black electrical fire kind of smoke! I run over and open the door of the dishwasher which turns off the cycle then I run back to the stairs and start yelling for Scott to come downstairs NOW! We both enter the kitchen and there are now FLAMES coming out of the dishwasher!!

FLAMES IN THE KITCHEN IS A HOLY CRAP MOMENT in my book!!!

We get everything under control and are in clean up mode when my mind starts working.... What if we had gone to bed??? How long would it have burned before the smoke alarm alerted us???

When I think of the things that could have happened and what did.. It just scares me so!!

So there's my story about the flaming dishwasher of doom, and here comes the public service announcement part... Please, NEVER LEAVE YOUR HOUSE WITH THE DISHWASHER, THE DRYER OR THE CLOTHES WASHER ON!! When I think of what could have happened - it's just too scary!!!

Anyway, the sun is shining and it is a beautiful day today and I am washing dishes by hand - like they did in the "olden days".

Oh, here is the quilt I made for my Mom (it's my ON THE RUN pattern and we added one row to the bottom), we worked on it together when she was out here for Thanksgiving and I think it turned out great! She loves it too!!

Well, it's official... the Olympics are over.. gotta get back to work... but I have LOVED watching them!!

Now it's on to the Quilting Olympics.. Ya'll know, those months that lead up to Market (when we all work like crazy)! So, starting tomorrow, I'll be picking fabric, designing, and sewing like a mad woman for awhile.. wish me luck!

I worked at Elaine's Quilt Block, a long time ago and there was a quilt that was all the rage back then... It was a lovely sampler quilt and A LOT of people were making it. We even kitted it in the most beautiful Civil War fabrics ever. I remember helping a lady pick out some backing fabric for her sampler quilt. She was so excited to finally finish it, take it to the quilter and get er' done. Well, about 6 month passed and I didn't see her, one day she came into the store and I was excited to ask her how the sampler quilt had turned out. She let out a laugh and told me her story. She had sewn it all together, sewn on the borders, gotten it quilted, bound it, and hung it on the wall...Then, and ONLY then, did she notice that she had put the Tree of Life block upside down . I asked her what she did and she told me that she hung the whole quilt upside down and then the Tree of Life was right side up and it looked great!

I've been thinking a lot about that lately and wondering what would have happened if she had just put the quilt on the floor and stepped back from time to time during the whole process. Would she have seen the upside down Tree of Life block a lot sooner and maybe even corrected the mistake before it was sewn together, quilted and bound.

I think that's the way it is in life. Sometimes we just have to take a step back to see the big picture. Then we can keep what we like and change or fix what we don't like.

So, today, maybe just take a little step back (from quilting or life or whatever) so you can see the big picture - perspective is a wonderful thing!

I am going to The Material Girls Quilt Shop in the morning to drop off the quilt my mom and I made over the Thanksgiving holiday. I am very excited and can't wait to see it all done. Wendy from Eagle Mountain Quilting is there every Saturday morning from 10:00 - 11:00 to pick up quilts that she works on during the week. She has a one week turn around time - which is FABULOUS.

So Ann, Vickie and I will be there bright and early to make purchases and do the drop off. I'll post pictures when it's done!

New Year, new projects, new designs, new patterns. I can't wait to get started on them!!! I think I have about 8 or 9 in my head that need to get out!
I am going on a quest today to find red and yellow fabric for one of my new projects. I just LOVE red and yellow quilts - they always seem so sunny and happy. I think I'll go to The Material Girls Quilt Shop, Elaine's Quilt Block, Pine Needles, and maybe Quilts Etc. When I get back, I'll show you my purchases. Wish me luck!

We had quite the inversion here in Salt Lake City a couple of days ago. It makes the air yucky and you don't really feel like going out in it.

She picked "On The Run" for her pattern and a beautiful Martha Negley print for the focus fabric. It was fun to put it together while she was here, we had a blast. The quilt turned out SO pretty!!! Once it is quilted I'll shoot some photos of it and show y'all how cool it is!

Ok, so I feel like I've totally dissed my mom. I have posted about my awesome brother, and my dear dad, so I figured it's now Mom's turn!!

What to say about my mom. I know daughters think their moms can do anything but... I swear she really can! She is a little ball of fire. She can cram more things into one day than any one else I know. It amazes me.

She has always been such an example to me. First of all she is the most compassionate person I know. She is a retired R.N. so I think it comes with the territory. But it's more than just that, she really cares about people and once you are her friend, you're a friend for life. She has always treated people with love and caring.

She takes the time to do the little things with her grandkids.

She loves to laugh which is a trait her mother had too. There have been many times when we have had absolute hysterics (sometimes at the wrong times) over some very funny stuff.

As I was looking at my limited library of digital photos, it was impossible to find pictures of just her. There were always other people in the photos with her. I guess that kind of sums up my mom. Her happy, positive nature and her "can do" attitude make her a joy to be around.

I wish you lived closer Mom, I miss you so.

Quilt Market and a Basketball Coach too

Hi gals! Well, I'm back from market and now shipping out orders - how awesome is that??!!!

But anyway, I had to take a break from counting and shipping so I thought I would catch you all up on my market happenings... So here goes, hope you enjoy this feast for the eyes. Not many words, just photo after photo - think of it as a slide show, you could even add your favorite music if you like.

Here's part of the set up. We were the "late" ones so everyone put their extra stuff in our booth - including a few extra poles and a giant wooden crate. Once that was taken care of, we got down to business. It only took about 3 hours to get it all set up and we even had time to spare before sample spree started.

Here is the finished booth. I think it turned out really nice. I cound not have done it without Valerie and Lindsey.

So as we said goodbye to Houston (and sweet potato fries) for awhile, we packed up boxes and sent them home (another act of faith)... to Utah. It is amazing how it all ends up looking like this in the end.

Now, I know you have all been at the edge of your seats wondering where the basketball coach fits into the title.... So, I'll tell you all the amazing story:

After we hauled my 2 boxes to the Fed X store - we being me and Liz and Beth who were so kind and drove me there, all of us went out to dinner to this mexican restaurant where we ate in the "quiet room" (and can I just tell ya, it really was NOT the quiet room). But the food was good and so was the company :) As we left the restaurant I spotted a guy that looked like the University of Utah Mens Basketball coach (and as many of you know, I am a HUGE U of U fan to say the least) so naturally I just HAD to go talk to him. Well, it really was coach Jim Boylen - wow, talk about a brush with greatness! Long story short, we talked and I got my photo with him too!! Needless to say, my son is just a little envious ha ha ha!

So, that's my story of Quilt Market and a Basketball Coach too!

Hi everybody, We are still in Houston waiting to leave but I wanted to tell y'all how wonderful market was!!!

Thanks to all who stopped and said hi and bought patterns! It was so nice to see old friends and meet new ones too!

I just have a few minutes to give you a small update on the market happenings so here goes:
Our next door neighbors were Pine Mountain Designs - fellow Utah people who we have known forever so it was so fun to be near them. We were across from Cozy Quilt Designs - they are so nice, it was a blast to meet them!

I SO PROMISE that more posts and photos from market will follow (forgot the cords for the camera)! I also have a totally awesome "Brush with Greatness" photo from the last day too (any guesses)????.

I thought I would give all of you just a little sneak peek. These are all of my new fall quilts that will be heading to Market next week (or should I say, shipping to market this week).

I am all finished except for some last minute things, like taking my patterns to the printer and boxing up all of my stuff to send out by friday eeek! I don't have near as many boxes as Ann. I think she should win some kind of prize.

I will post "big" photos of the new quilts next week so keep checking back.

It seems that the closer market creeps, the more time passes between posts hmmmmm.. I really should look into that.

Just a quick update on all the happenings here at Mary's Cottage Quilts:
The sewing machine is working overtime - I just hope I don't walk into the sewing room one morning and find it laying on the floor...
The computer is also working overtime.
The camera is also working overtime.
and yeah, so am I...

I am all done (see last post) with my own stuff, now just working on some goodies for other booths. I did get a helper as you can see from the photo above. He's not really that good yet - doesn't have that whole 1/4" seam thing down, so we just let him observe for now. He's actually Lindsey's dog Bosco.

I did want to wish my all time favorite singer a very Happy Birthday today so here goes...

Yay for me!!! I am DONE (in case you didn't get the memo)!!! I have finished sewing all the market quilts for MY booth! What an awesome feeling. Still lots of photographing, pattern writing, pattern printing, pattern stuffing, shipping, and all that. But.... The quilts are done :)

Happy Birthday Pa!

August 16th 2009 would have been my Dad's 86th birthday so I thought in honor of him, I would celebrate his life today on my blog:

It's hard to just pick a few memories to share with you but I'll try.

I feel so proud and blessed to be the daughter of Dudley Osborn Stewart. He has taught me so many things in my life.

He taught me to love dogs. He loved them so much and would say "the only thing wrong with dogs is that they just don't last long enough".

He taught me how to sail. He loved to go fast out there on the water. The best time to do this was right before a storm was coming and the wind was whipping. He would take the little Sunfish sail boat and just fly - with a big smile on his face. This was his favorite time to sail.

He taught me practical stuff to, like how to grease a car. He would make me guide him while he drove the old Chevelle up the homemade wooden ramps. Then we would grease all the fittings and set the timing too. I didn't really do much, but Dad just wanted me to be there to "help".

How to have fun. My dad absolutely LOVED to have fun. One time he was involved in a "point wide" water fight that included ALL the kids on Hartson Point. It was him against the world that day and we all ended up soaked and in the lake. What a blast we had.

He taught me to love nature. Whether it was walking in the fields behind our house with his dog or hiking up the glen behind the cottage. How I treasured those hikes and the things he would point out to me. He would always find the willow trees in the early spring and say "watch those ones because when they start to turn yellow then spring will come". I also know the names of most backyard birds thanks to him and my mom too.

He taught me to love the lake with all my heart. The lake was his place. It was where he spent all of his summers as a kid. It was the most peaceful place I can think of. It's where family gathers to share fun times and make lasting memories. It is still my heaven on earth and even though my dad is gone, I still feel close to him there.

I hope I can pass along to my kids the fun, wisdom, kindness and love he always showed me. Happy Birthday Pa, I miss you!

This post is dedicated to my totally awesome brother!! It's his 40th birthday today so I thought I would pick on him just a little bit! You know I am allowed to do that, after all I am the big sister :)

Dan, You are awesome!! I am so proud of all you have accomplished in your life. You are a joy to mom (I know she loves you best ha ha) and I am glad you are near her to help out when she needs it.
My one wish in this world is that dad was here to see that all you have done! I just love you so much and wish you a very happy 40th - you old man!!

My First and Latest!!

Carrie and Camille, are having this cool Parade of Quilts show and it has been SO fun to see everyone's first quilt and latest quilt. I've loved all of the evolving that has gone on over the years. I have only been doing the quilting thing for about 16 years (a relative newcomer to some of you :). But I did sew clothes and stuff in high school and took a lot of home ec classes. I have even sewn button down oxford shirts (WHAT WAS I THINKING)?????
I thought I would share 2 of "my firsts" and one latest with you too! Here goes.....

My First first
It's only 14" x 18" It is the finished product from the first ever class I took. This quilt was made with TEMPLATES and I cut everything out with scissors AND I hand sewed the whole thing together, and hand quilted it - no sewing machine used AT ALL!!! Wow, that was the first and last time I did that!

Here is another of my firsts, it is 15 years old and is the softest quilt I have ever made. I think it must have to do with the fact that it is hand quilted. There is really a different "feel" to a hand quilted quilt. I was looking at it, and my points are cut off on a lot of the bear paws, but I don't care, I still love this quilt! It took me awhile to quilt it (crosshatch on the diagonal 1" apart) but I did it all!!!! I made it for my son when he was born. I still love the way it feels

My latest - A very fun table topper for the holidays - made out of Figgy Pudding. I think it would make a darling baby quilt too :)

This cute quilt is my friend Lindsey's VERY FIRST EVER QUILT!! I think it turned out darling!! She used my pattern Spice Cake. Way to go Lindsey, there will be many more to come :)

PS I completed all but 2 things from my dreaded list - NOT BAD!! (if you are confused, see post below)

Yep, it's official. I am one year older. Well, actually my birthday was on Sunday, but I didn't want to put up my dukes and fight with all the dads out there so I waited a few days.
I started the day by running 4 miles (a new record for this ole' gal) and a little later I had a big gulp of my beverage of choice. Then just celebrated the day. I also found a box of old photos. I even included a few here. It was a good day!

First of all I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to all of you who gave me such wonderful suggestions!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I am now in the kit making, pattern printing, and quilt gathering mode. It will be a lot of fun and I can hardly wait for Festival in July! It will be here sooner than I know it!!
I will be picking the winners later today too and will post them tomorrow.

Now, on a totally different subject, I am home bound today as we are having our carpets stretched.
A couple of years after we moved in, we noticed our NEW carpet getting "bumps" in it. In many places and in many different rooms!!
So we finally bit the bullet and decided it was about time to get those bumps fixed. We had to take ALL THE FURNITURE OUT OF THE ROOMS IN QUESTION - a huge undertaking and today is the day when our carpet will finally be "bump free" again.

Tomorrow I will announce the winners and tell you about another cool thing that I am going to do on Thursday. I am SO excited I can hardly sit still!! (Hint: It doesn't include carpet).

Sadly (or not) I have no photos for today (probably for the better as they would include lumpy carpet or something equally as boring).
